Medical Respite Offers Hope and Healing

Following the tragic death of his son, Ronald experienced homelessness and mental health challenges, which led to a psychiatric hospital stay in 2022. After discharge, he connected with our medical respite program, which offers specialized care and bridges the gap between hospital stays and the streets or shelter. WNYC/Gothamist recently highlighted Ronald’s story and the program.

ICL is proud to partner with NYC Health + Hospitals to meet the whole health needs of New Yorkers like Ronald through this model of care. Thanks to help from the medical respite team and his own determination to get back on his feet, Ronald is now living in ICL supportive housing and is hopeful for the future. “I'm going to be around for a while. I told my kids I'm gonna see if I can give them another 40 years,” he says.

Changing Spaces on CBS New York

Jenny spent years unhoused and struggling with her mental health. Stability always felt out of reach—until she moved into Changing Spaces, our first-of-its-kind program that provides a new path to permanent housing for people with histories of homelessness.

CBS New York recently visited Changing Spaces in Coney Island, offering an exclusive look at this private home-like setting where a small group of guests receive high-touch, person-centered, trauma-informed services from a team of professionals, including peer specialists. Since its opening, the program has served 30 guests, 7 of whom are still living at the residence and 23 who have transitioned into housing in the community.

"This is my sanctuary. This is where I come to pray—it is a safe haven,” Jenny told CBS.
