ICL’s Medical Respite Center “Feels Like Home”

Keith was living in a shelter when he experienced an overdose and landed in the hospital. Following his discharge, he came to our medical respite center, which serves NYC Health + Hospital patients experiencing homelessness by connecting them with specialized care and housing supports. “I came to this place, and they made me feel like home,” Keith recently told News12. During his stay, Keith received mental health and medication management support, as well as “a shower, clothes, love, and guidance.”

ICL is proud to partner with NYC Health + Hospitals to meet the whole health needs of New Yorkers like Keith through the medical respite model of care.

Sponsorships, tables, and tickets are available for ICL’s Annual Gala on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

Join us at The Pierre Hotel to celebrate hope and recovery.

Introducing: Coffee On Us

Destigmatizing the biggest challenges that New Yorkers face starts with having a conversation.

In our new video “Coffee On Us,” which we've launched ahead of Mental Health Awareness MonthNew Yorkers have candid discussions about mental health, substance use, and housing insecurity.

Christine is one of three inspiring program participants who shares her experience. She has dealt with depression for as long as she can remember. Ten years ago, she was in a “black hole” when she connected with Sharon, an ICL case worker.

To this day, Sharon supports Christine, ensuring she takes her medication, sees a doctor, and remains stably housed. “ICL helped me live the independent life I have always wanted,” says Christine.

Watch the important dialogue that unfolds after Christine and others openly talk about their experiences. Be sure to share the video on social media and with your network. Together we can #EndTheStigma and create a better city for New Yorkers facing the greatest challenges.

This Autism Awareness Month, ICL’s Senior Vice President of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Services Richard Anemone authored an opinion piece about the need for sensory-friendly health care settings for Autism Spectrum News.

In the piece,
Richard notes that by “prioritizing the creation of sensory-friendly environments,
[healthcare] facilities can demonstrate their commitment to inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with autism spectrum disorder." Benefits for patients can include reduced anxiety, increased access to health care, and bolstered trust in the medical community. This month and every month, ICL is committed to advocating for the needs of New Yorkers with autism.
