Deena's Story of Hope and Recovery

Deena celebrated her birthday this month with a renewed sense of purpose. She has taken pride in decorating her new apartment in Brooklyn and recently enjoyed fostering a dog from a local shelter. In the future, she hopes to help people who are pursuing recovery from substance use.

Her aspirations stem from personal experience. Every week, Deena visits ICL’s Hope & Recovery Center at our East New York Health HUB, where she receives robust support as she navigates her own recovery.

Years ago, Deena was happily raising her kids with her husband on Long Island. “We had everything we wanted,” she shared. But life took a turn after a devastating car accident with a drunk driver left her with a dislocated jaw. Deena turned to drugs to cope with the chronic pain, leading to a downward spiral of substance use—including witnessing overdoses and experiencing her own.

A five-year prison sentence was a turning point for Deena. “Incarceration pushed me to rethink the cycle I was in. I decided I was going to stay sober.” She returned home last September and entered a women’s shelter, moving into her own apartment just a few months later. "It’s exciting. After everything, I just wanted my own space," she says.

Deena’s engagement with our Hope & Recovery Center has been a cornerstone of her journey. She loves connecting with other participants and is even teaching groups to crochet as a way to relax. “At ICL, I’ve learned about my thought patterns and how you don’t have to listen to the negative voices. It’s comforting to be with others who have experienced similar things—I feel so much less alone.”

“I’m trying to get my family back together,” she shares. “The Hope & Recovery Center has helped me focus on the positive feedback I get from them. As long as I stay strong, they’ll be proud of me.”

Reducing Harm this Overdose Awareness Day

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day. According to the NYC Department of Health, someone dies of a drug overdose every three hours. Fentanyl, a highly potent synthetic opioid, is often involved in these deaths.

Harm reduction tools like fentanyl test strips are critical in efforts to quell the overdose crisis. Our Hope & Recovery Center offers these resources to our clients. Learn how to safely use a fentanyl test kit from Drucilla Williams, ICL’s Vice President of Substance Use Disorder Services.

A Decade of Pathway Home

This month marks ten years of ICL’s Pathway Home, a Coordinated Behavioral Care program in Brooklyn and Manhattan. This innovative, community-based program offers care to individuals with behavioral health diagnoses who are transitioning out of settings like hospitals.

Our interdisciplinary team of behavioral health clinicians, case managers, peer specialists, and a registered nurse work closely with each participant for six to nine months to prevent future hospitalizations and help them achieve their whole health goals. Alethea Glave, ICL’s Vice President of Supported Housing, reflects on the early days of Pathway Home, and the team shares more about their work and successes in this Program Spotlight.
