Expanding Services for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) This Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we appreciate the residents and staff who are part of our incredible I/DD community. Social workers, medical professionals, and specialized teams work tirelessly to help New Yorkers like Junior to achieve their goals and live as independently as possible. Junior emigrated from Haiti as a teenager and enrolled in high school special education courses. As an adult, he stayed in shelters and mental health facilities before landing at ICL. He enjoys outings to Barclays Center and hopes to learn to drive, secure a job, and travel to Florida. “I get attention from the staff and they treat me good,” Junior says. Thanks to support from the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, ICL recently opened a new housing program in Brooklyn that will provide services for six young people with autism who are transitioning out of residential schools. | |
