Celebrating a Much-Needed Investment in Our Workforce

This month, ICL testified at City Hall to call for re-envisioning the shelter system, bolstering proven behavioral health interventions, and investing in whole-health support for veterans. The expansion and success of these programs—and others that address New York’s mental health and homelessness crises—relies on our invaluable human services workers.

The Mayor and the New York City Council recently committed to a historic cost-of-living adjustment for these City-funded employees, heeding the years-long advocacy message of ICL and hundreds of other organizations. Although there is still progress to be made, this investment helps to ensure that nonprofits like ICL can hire and retain employees to do some of the most important work in the city.

Sponsorships, tables, and tickets are now available for ICL’s 2024 annual gala on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. Join us to celebrate hope and recovery—we hope to see you there!

Expanding Services for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD)

This Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we appreciate the residents and staff who are part of our incredible I/DD community. Social workers, medical professionals, and specialized teams work tirelessly to help New Yorkers like Junior to achieve their goals and live as independently as possible. Junior emigrated from Haiti as a teenager and enrolled in high school special education courses. As an adult, he stayed in shelters and mental health facilities before landing at ICL. He enjoys outings to Barclays Center and hopes to learn to drive, secure a job, and travel to Florida. “I get attention from the staff and they treat me good,” Junior says.

Thanks to support from the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, ICL recently opened a new housing program in Brooklyn that will provide services for six young people with autism who are transitioning out of residential schools.

ICL’s VP of Transitional Services Receives Impact Award

Sean Ramdhanie was recently recognized by Caribbean Life for his impact at ICL and in the broader community. With Sean’s oversight, our Borden Avenue Veterans Residence placed 130 veterans into permanent housing in 2023, marking a significant milestone in their journey to stability. He also spearheaded a shelter beautification project, improved privacy, and bolstered programming for residents. ICL is proud to have leaders like Sean on our team.
