Giving Thanks

In this season of gratitude, we are thankful for our staff, Board, volunteers, and many supporters. Your commitment helps New Yorkers with behavioral health challenges live healthy and fulfilling lives.

Ahead of Thanksgiving, we distributed turkeys, chickens, produce, and other staples at the East New York HUB food pantry in partnership with Community Healthcare Network. The program serves more than 350 households weekly, including children and seniors. It provides food in a community that has one of the city’s highest rates of food insecurity at 18.3%.

Honoring Our Veterans

This National Veterans Month, we recognized those who have bravely served our country. Unfortunately, according to a recent report, 13% of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness are veterans.

ICL operates Borden Avenue Residence, New York City’s only shelter that exclusively serves veterans, where we hosted a series of events to further support the long-term stability of clients. We are grateful to our many partners for their generosity—including Grubhub, which provided 500 meals from veteran-owned restaurant O'Neills, and General Needs, which provided sneakers, hats, gloves, and other essentials for our veteran guests. But we recognize that stability is best built through permanent housing and are proud to report that we successfully transitioned more than 100 veterans out of Borden Avenue Veterans Residence and into their own homes this year, marking a significant milestone in their whole-health journey.

And there is more to come. Earlier this month, President & CEO Jody Rudin proudly stood alongside the New York City Council as they announced legislation to address the mental health needs of veterans. ICL has long advocated for investments in mental health services specifically designed for this population.

YOU Can Make Dreams Come True

It’s no secret that New York City is facing major challenges. Tens of thousands of people are sleeping in shelters every night and demand for mental-health services is soaring.

Behind these trends and numbers are real people with hope for a better future. ICL meets New Yorkers where they are and works with them to achieve their unique goals—whether that’s connecting with a mental-health provider, enjoying a warm and nutritious meal every night, accessing recovery support, or moving into a new home. No matter where our participants start or where they want to go, ICL is there to provide compassionate whole-health care along the way.

Thank you to everyone who donated to ICL on Giving Tuesday—your generosity helps make dreams come true. It’s not too late to give this holiday season! There are thousands of individuals and families who urgently need your help.
